Automata, Chippendale

It is the first time in 13 years that my son didn't have a birthday party
because this time, my son who is now officially a teen wanted to have
a quiet, intimate and memorable birthday celebration just with the family.
Choosing the perfect restaurant wasn't that hard. I immediately thought of Automata.
I have been wanting to try it since it opened a few months back.
Automata is housed in the bricked Old Clare Hotel that is just across Spice Alley
and next door to Kensington Street Social.
The place is cool, a bit industrial and edgy but intimate.
Just what my teenager son might prefer.

Chef Clayton Wells (ex Momofuku Seiƍbo sous chef) is a genius at creating flavours
that will set your taste buds into orbit! We were all impressed.
Overall, it was an excellent dining experience and would certainly recommend it to everyone.

Red witlof and violet mustard

Fried salmon skin, yuzu kosho

Cherries, fermented juice, onions and capers
This dish is simply fantastic! The fried capers are to die for!

Wow! Those rolls spread with anchovy butter will surely delight your palate.
The bread was fluffy with the right amount of crisp. The butter tasted extraordinarily great.
Whipped anchovy butter, sunflower seeds with chicken jus.

Steamed Hapuka, Asparagus, Chickpeas, Laver

Smoked Quial, Barley Koji, Hispi Cabbage

Mukai Shuzo Ine Mankai Red Sake
A bit sweet and tart- cherry and pomegranate flavours.

Inside Skirt, Jerusalem Artichoke, Shiitake, Arame, Tamari

Leon Posset, Blueberry, Lemon Thyme & Back Sesame

L'Americano Espresso Bar, Alexandria

This elegant 1950's themed cafe set in Coco Republic's flagship showroom in Alexandria
is a must visit for coffee and boat lovers alike.
The space features rich, dark wood floors, warm leathers, marble, gold cutlery
and sparkling chandeliers.
What I love most is the collection of thirty mini mahogany Chris Craft Italian Riva yachts
adorning the brick walls. They are sleekly beautiful.

So why not let the atmosphere of this cafe transport you to the Italian Riviera
and enjoy its delicious food. La dolce vita!

Grandma's, Rosebery

Delicious dishes and traditional recipes inspired by Grandmas all over the world is what's being served here
but one dish in particular has caught my fancy and it is called Shakshuka.
So what is Shakshuka or Shakshouka? The word means "all mixed up" in Hebrew and Arabic.
It is a very popular Israeli breakfast dish of eggs poached in sauce of tomatoes, capsicums and
cumin served in a frying pan at the table.
It tastes even better accompanied by pita or crusty bread.

There's really nothing like the pleasures of hearty, delicious comfort food they serve here.
Worth a visit!

In the meantime, here is another version of the recipe by Gordon Ramsay
that I made called "North African Eggs".  (click here)
It it by far the most popular post I have on my blog.

Cafe Paci, Darlinghurst

Finnish-born chef and owner, Pasi Petanen was Head Chef
at the hatted fine dining restaurant Marque.
He has now taken over the premises of the Mexican Taqueria Cafe Pacifico,
and you can still see the faded letters on the signage of the former cafe.

We had dinner and celebrated two birthdays and an anniversary at Cafe Paci.
Quite an interesting place. It's relaxed, casual and fun.
Dishes are creative and flavours are unique.
 Staff is friendly and helpful.
I would love to be back again.

Kitchen by Mike, Rosebery (CLOSED)

It's a canteen-style cafe set inside Koskela warehouse.
I love the concept and I think it's cool.
We wondered around the Koskela displays after the meal
and discovered some unique and beautiful pieces of sustainable
home accessories and furniture.

Kitchen by Mike has many healthy options for breakfast and lunch
as well as pastries and cakes.
The menu changes daily based on the availability of fresh ingredients from the market.

To order, you need to go to the counter then place your order and pay, grab a number
and they will bring the dishes to you.
Food is great, I'm not complaining.
